How to get to Punta Tombo
Open from September to March from 8am to 8pm
PUERTO PIRÁMIDES: This Magellanic penguin reserve is located 190 km south of Madryn. It is the largest continental colony of this species in the world.
From September to March, Magellanic penguins come ashore to build their nests, raise their young, and molt.
You can get there by car or rental car, or hire an excursion from Puerto Madryn.
Leaving Puerto Madryn, it is 130 km along National Route 3, then take Provincial Route 75 until you connect with Provincial Route 1. This last section is gravel. Click here to see the route on Google Maps.
Both on the way there and on the way back, you will pass through Trelew. I highly recommend visiting the MEF (Egidio Feruglio Paleontological Museum), where you can explore and enjoy an incredible exhibition of dinosaurs and other fossils found in this region, and see the largest dinosaur found to date.
EXCURSIONS: Several agencies offer full-day tours. They pick you up at the apartment early in the morning and bring you back around 6 pm. Some combine this excursion with a visit to Gaiman to explore this town of Welsh origin and enjoy traditional Welsh tea.
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: There is no public transportation to get there; you have to go by your own car, rent one, or hire an excursion from Puerto Madryn.
CAR RENTAL: There are several companies that offer car rentals in the city. Rates vary depending on the company and the car chosen. You can find better prices by renting in advance through their website or through websites that offer and compare prices between several companies. Here are the links to some of the companies that operate in Puerto Madryn. Click here.
