How to get to Península Valdés
Open year-round from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
PUERTO PIRÁMIDES: This is the only permanent settlement on the Peninsula. To get there from Puerto Madryn, it's 100 km, taking Provincial Route 1 and then Provincial Route 2.
Upon arriving at El Desempeño, you must pay for access to the Peninsula. This payment can only be made in cash or debit card. To enter, you must show your ID or passport.
In Puerto Pirámides, you can book whale watching tours with any of the providers, and other activities such as underwater baptism.
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: You can take a bus to Puerto Pirámides that departs from the Puerto Madryn Bus Terminal. The number of services varies depending on the time of year and whether it's a weekday or weekend. You can see the bus schedule by clicking here.
There is no public transportation to reach the various reserves within the Peninsula. If you plan to explore the area to visit the sea lion, elephant seal, and penguin colonies, and perhaps see orcas, you'll go by car, rent one, or book a tour from Puerto Madryn.
HOW TO TRAVEL THE PENINSULA: Departing from Puerto Madryn, there are 400 km of travel distance, which you can cover by car or on a tour. Here's a link to Google Maps where you can see the complete route.
EXCURSIONS: Several agencies offer full-day tours of the Valdés Peninsula. The agencies pick you up at the apartment early in the morning and return you around 6:00 PM. You can book the Peninsula tour with or without whale watching included. You can also go in your own car or rent a car and book the whale watching there.
CAR RENTAL: Rates vary depending on the company and the car chosen. Better prices can be found by booking in advance through their website or by visiting their websites and comparing prices among several companies. Here are links to some of the companies that operate in Puerto Madryn. Click here.
