How to get to El Doradillo

Whale season from June to October - Free admission

PROTECTED NATURAL AREA: Known as "El Doradillo," this reserve includes several beaches a few kilometers from Madryn where you can observe a unique spectacle. Here you will have the opportunity to see Southern Right Whales from the beach and just a few meters away. The best place to see them is called "Las Canteras" Beach.

WHEN TO GO: The best time to see whales in El Doradillo is during August and September, when the largest concentration of adults and their calves is observed. We recommend going at high tide, as this is when they come closest to the coast. During the morning and late afternoon, the whales are usually most active; you can see them raising their tails or releasing that jet of water, as well as the characteristic breaches of the southern right whale. Check the Tide Chart here for the best time.

HOW TO GET TO "LAS CANTERAS" BEACH: Departing from Puerto Madryn, it is 19 km long, which you can travel by car, bike, or on a tour. Here is the link to Google Maps where you can see the complete route.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: There is no public transportation to reach the various beaches in the El Doradillo Protected Area. You'll have to drive, rent one, hire a taxi, or take a tour from Puerto Madryn.

EXCURSIONS: Several agencies offer transportation to Las Canteras Beach, and in some cases, the program includes lunch. The meeting place and time are arranged with each agency.

CAR RENTAL: Rates vary depending on the company and the car chosen. Better prices can be found by booking in advance through their website or by visiting their websites and comparing prices among several companies. Here are links to some of the companies that operate in Puerto Madryn. Click here.
